Biographical details: Dr Crispian Olver
Director-General

Dr Crispian (Chippy) Garth Olver is Director-General of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. He has previously worked as Deputy Director-General: Local Government in the Department of Provincial and Local Government. He was responsible, among others, for the White Paper, legislative framework and implementation of the new local government system, as well as for coordinating the provision of municipal infrastructure, maintaining and regulating municipal finances at a national level.

He worked in the national Reconstruction and Development Programme Office from July 1994 until June 1996, where he was in charge of development planning and local economic development. Previously he worked for INLOGOV (University of Western Cape) as programme manager and for CORPLAN (a development NGO based in East London) as overall director. He has background training as a medical practitioner, and worked at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital at Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape.
