Mohammed Valli Moosa was born on 9 February 1957 in Johannesburg.
He attended Park Primary School and Lenasia State Indian High School.
He completed a B.Sc. degree with majors in mathematics and physics
at the University of Durban-Westville.
Involved in the freedom struggle all his life, he was imprisoned
in 1980, 1985, 1987-88 and in 1989. He was under house arrest until
the unbanning of the ANC on 2 February 1990.
He was a founder member of the United Democratic Front and served
on its National Executive Committee. Since 1991 he has served as
a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC.
As part of the ANC's constitutional team, he participated in the
drafting of the democratic constitution of the Republic of South
Africa.
He was elected to parliament in 1994. He served as Minister of
Constitutional Development under President Mandela, and since 1999
serves as Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
