MARINE AQUACULTURE MANAGEMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA

PURPOSE:

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism is responsible for the management,
regulation and development of the Marine Aquaculture sector in South Africa.

FUNCTIONS:

• Develop and implement marine aquaculture legislation
• Regulation of the marine aquaculture sector
• Manage and promote Aqua-culture activities
• Identify suitable development nodes / opportunities
• Identify suitable socio-economic opportunities within the mariculture sector
• Monitor environmental impacts on coast
• Monitor socio-economic impact of mariculture initiatives
• Provide support to socio-economic initiatives within Aqua-culture sector
• Integrate activities and role players
• Provide strategic guidance to partnerships within Aqua-culture sector
• Development of operation permit conditions

REQUIREMENTS FOR PERMIT APPLICATIONS:

1. Appropriate site, zoned for agriculture use;
2. Approval for operation from the local municipality;
3. Map (with coordinates) to indicate locality of operation;
4. Valid lease agreement (get information from a board responsible for the land that you are buying or leasing / copy of Title Deed;
5. Company registration documents;
6. Valid Tax Clearance Certificate (SARS); and a
7. Business plan

Important: The Business Plan should include:

a. The species name (scientific and common)
b. Methods of cultivation
c. Means of prevention against potential environmental impacts/ provide proof that an Environmental Impact Assessment/ Scoping report was done on the envisaged site, if this becomes a necessity.
d. Indicate if any chemicals, fertilizers, hormones, etc. will be used.
e. Provide a map of the location of the operational site potential sources of pollution in the area?
f. Destination market (National and international)
