Marine and Coastal Management’s fisheries scientists and managers are consistently looking at possible “new fisheries” as alternatives to present fisheries that may be oversubscribed or even overexploited.
We define a “new fishery” as a fishery that is a regulated fishery that exploits a resource or part of a resource that has not previously been managed by the state as a commercial fishery.
It also includes previously unexploited resources, underexploited resources that had hitherto been a bycatch of another fishery, or fully exploited or even overexploited resources that had hitherto not been subject to any management controls .
The fundamental objectives of looking to new fisheries are to –
- Reduce pressures on currently oversubscribed or overexploited fisheries, such as abalone and certain linefish stocks
- Create sustainable avenues of employment for fishers who may not be able to exploit certain “traditional” stocks such as abalone or linefish
- Empower historically disadvantaged fishers
Marine and Coastal Management has a comprehensive New Fisheries Policy in place which is aimed at informing members of the public on how new fisheries are intended to be identified and developed.
We encourage you to advise us on possible new fisheries. The Chief Director: Research, Antarctica and Islands welcomes your ideas.
