Long term rights - West Coast Rock Lobster near Shore
COMMERCIAL FISHING RIGHTS ALLOCATED IN THE WEST COAST ROCK LOBSTER NEAR SHORE FISHERY
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has allocated 19 long term commercial fishing rights in the West Coast Rock Lobster near shore fishery for Zone A. These rights will be valid for a period of ten years.
Each of the successful applicants were allocated 1000kgs of lobster for the 2005/2006 fishing season, which is double the amount allocated to these fishers during the medium term period. In addition, those successful applicants that nominated a rowing boat will also have automatic access to snoek.
A total of 184 applicants applied for lobster in Zone A. Of the 184 applicants 33 were medium term right holder applicants and 151 were new entrant applicants.
The Department prioritised the allocation of long term rights in this zone as lobster in Zone A tend to go into berry much sooner in the season when compared to other zones.
Commercial fishing rights in this fishery were granted only to applicants who invested in the sector, who worked as crew in the WCRL limited sector and who are reliant on WCRL for a livelihood.
Prior to finalising the allocations, the department published a provisional list of successful applicants in Zone A for comment. None of the comments received warranted an investigation by the Rights Verification Unit.
The Department will shortly issue the provisional lists for Zones B and C for comment.
