Current Projects and Partners
This page provides details of the various projects being run by DEAT and/or its partners in climate change action.1. Cities for Climate Protection CampaignMain Funding Partner: US Agency for International Development (USAID)Other partners: International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and various cities throughout South Africa.Under the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign, staff from the ICLEI have been working with 8 municipal governments to reduce local emissions of greenhouse gases. This is being done as part of a world-wide network of over 500 local authorities that have demonstrated a commitment to mitigating climate chnage through local action. The cities involved in this campaign are:
Within the format of this project, the cities work through 5 milestones that comprise the Citiies in Climate Protection process:1. They choose a baseline year and inventory energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from the city's operations. They then forecast these emissions for the next 10-20 years2. They set goals for greenhouse gas emission reduction or avoidance3. The develop a Local Action Plan that identifies the measures that, when implemented, will reduce emissions and energy use to meet the city's emission reduction/avoidance goals.4. They begin implementation of the measures in the local action plan.5. The Monitor and verify progress on the implementation of measures.>/br> Cities receive funding in four installments - and each payment is attached to the completion of contract deliverables which are linked to the milestones above. Each city (both staff and elected officials) must also attend a series of 6 national workshops to share ideas, information and experiences.Information on the outcomes of the CCP for some cities can be found on their individual websites - for example, the City of Cape Town has published newsletters and its final Greenhouse Gas Inventory report (2003) on www.capetown.gov.za/enviro/emd/projects.aspGeneral information on the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign is also found on the ICLEI website ICLEI
The concentration of C02 in the atmosphere has increased more than 30% since the dawn of the industrial revolution and is now higher than it has been in 430 000 years Climate Change could put 25% of all land animals and plants on a path to extinction over the next 50 yearsWith global warming, water availability is expected to decrease. 5 billion people are expected to be loving in water stressed areas by 2050 1998 was the hottest year (globally) on record - followed by 2002, 2003 and 2004 Alaska's glaciers have melted more in the last 100 years than at any time in the past 10 centuries
