The location of the CMA in
the winter rainfall region and the predominant summer and winter winds would seem to
indicate a high potential for the dispersion of air pollution from the metropolitan area.
Indeed, the cleansing effects of the summer south-easter or 'Cape Doctor', are well known.
Nevertheless, a combination of local topography and climate cause the CMA to be
susceptible to air pollution, particularly during winter inversions. Sources of air
pollution are also numerous and widespread and include industry, road traffic, power
generation and the use of wood and coal fuels by a large sector of the population. As a
result,
monitoring data shows that air quality is deteriorating and this trend could accelerate if
corrective action is not taken.
