About the CMA
Biota
The CMA is located within an area of world class biodiversity and conservation value. This is a result of both the terrestrial ecosystems and the diverse coastal and marine habitats created by the warm waters of False Bay and colder waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The CMA, for instance, is located within the Cape Floristic Region, one of six floral kingdoms in the world. The Cape Peninsula contains some 2 256 indigenous plant species, 90% being endemic, and some 141 listed as Red Data Book species. These species occur in a variety of unique habitats, which collectively create and maintain the Fynbos Biome. Loss of habitat is a primary cause of loss of biodiversity.
