Located west of the 19° East longitude straddling the 34° South latitude, the Cape Metropolitan Area is the southern most metropolis on the African continent (see Figure 1).  Also see a general overview Map with place names for more detail.

Situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, the CMA covers an area of 2 159 km2. The CMA is largely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south with the most prominent landmass being the Cape Peninsula, attached to the mainland by the sandy plain of the Cape Flats. The CMA is enclosed by mountains to the north and east.
