About the CMA
Education
All areas of the national education system have undergone substantial restructuring which in turn has affected education in the CMA. The first phase of Curriculum 2005 was implemented in 1998 in schools in the CMA, starting in Grade 1. Curriculum 2005 represents a shift towards a system of education that emphasizes linkages between subjects including the human and social sciences and natural sciences thus equipping learners with the ability to understand and manage their resources better.

In 1997 the Western Cape Province had the highest pass rate in the country, as well as the

highest proportion of candidates who passed with university exemption, an achievement repeated in 1998. Although the information presented in this section relates to the Western Cape Province, it provides an indication of the status of education in the CMA.
