About the CMA
Energy
Urbanisation and population growth contribute to the increased demand for energy in the CMA. The key sources of energy in the CMA are electricity, petrol, diesel and coal. The CMA is the site of the only nuclear power station in South Africa, Koeberg Power Station. A significant number of people in the CMA nevertheless still use paraffin and wood for cooking and heating.

The burning of fossil fuels and other energy sources contributes to environmental degradation mostly in the form of air pollution. Apart from the attendant risks of operating a nuclear power station, the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station produces nuclear waste that has to be disposed of.
