State of the Environment

About the CMA
Environmental health
In the CMA the demand for shelter, infrastructure and basic social services coupled with high levels of pollution, has serious health implications for the urban poor. Health status is further threatened by high levels of poverty and low levels of environment and health literacy.

Rapid population growth and urbanization, ongoing development and inappropriate patterns of consumption and production have collectively placed greater pressure on the natural environment.
For many in the CMA, the deteriorating quality of the environment is a key determinant of environmental health status. The increasing frequency and intensity of air pollution events across the metropole has focused attention on the health risks associated with pollution. Given their poor living conditions and social and economic marginalisation, poverty-stricken communities often experience lower levels of health.
Issues
In order to provide a detailed description of the state of the environment, the focus has been to identify and examine specific issues within an overall theme in order to examine the state and pressures on each of these issues more thoroughly.

Issue Health risks resulting from air and water pollution
