HOW TO USE THIS CD-ROM ---------------------- This CD-ROM contains HTML and Acrobat (PFD) documents, as well as ArcView shape files. You need not copy the contents of the CD-ROM to your hard disk. 1. In order to view the HTML files (the state of the environment report) you need a web browser. 2. In order to view the Acrobat files you need the Acrobat Reader (provided on this CD). (You can also view the Acrobat files from within your browser. Please refer to the documentation supplied with Acrobat Reader). 3. To view ArcView Shape Files you need Arc Explorer (provided on this CD-ROM) PLEASE NOTE: The Pretoria Metro State of the Environment Report on this CD-ROM uses the Shockwave plug-in. It is not necessary to install this plug in if you read the information from the CD-ROM as it will install automatically when you access the CD-ROM. If however you have copied the information on the CD-ROM to your hard disk, you will have to install the plug-in yourself. It is available at: www.macromedia.com The following sections describe how to install the software on this CD-ROM. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- BROWSER ------- If you already have a web browser installed, you can start it, and open the index.htm file on the CD-ROM. If you do NOT have a web browser installed, or you want to upgrade to a newer version you can install it now. Netscape Communicator 4.6 is included on this CD-ROM. In addition to the browser Netscape Communicator also contains features like Messenger e-mail, Collabra discussion groups, Composer web page creator, Conference real-time Internet talk and AOL Instant Messenger. Start installation ------------------ -Windows 95 or NT: 1. From the Start menu, choose Run 2. Press the Browse button. 3. Open the Netscape folder/directory on the CD-ROM drive 4. Click on the cc32e461.exe file and follow the installation instructions 5. When the installation is complete, start Netscape, and from the File menu, choose Open Page. 6. Press the Choose File button, locate the CD-ROM drive, and select the index.htm file. PLEASE NOTE: We have created a special profile for Netscape Communicator containing links to many international State of the Environment Reports. To activate this profile, follow the following steps: First create a new profile 1. On the Windows desktop, go to Start, Programs, Netscape Communicator, Utilities, User Profile Manager. 2. Select new, and on the next screen select next. 3. Type in your name and e-mail address (if available). 4. Under Profile name, type a profile name. 5. Click on next and follow the instructions on the screen. 6. Once the creation of a profile is complete, Netscape communicator will load using the new profile. Secondly, activate the DEA&T profile. 1. Copy the dea_t folder (available under the Netscape folder on the CD-ROM) to the C:\program files\netscape\users folder on your hard disk. 2. On the Windows desktop, go to Start, Programs, Netscape Communicator, Utilities, User Profile Manager. 3. Select new, and on the next screen select next. 4. Type in your name and e-mail address (if available). Press next. 5. Under Profile name, type DEA&T. 6. The Profile manager will indicate that a folder for this profile already exist, and will ask you if you want to use the data in the profile. click on yes. 7. Netscape communicator will start using the DEA&T profile. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACROBAT READER 1. Go to the acrobat folder/directory on the CD-ROM 2. Double click on the ar302.exe file and follow the installation instructions. The state of the environment cookbook in Acrobat format can be found in the cookbook folder/directory. Please note that some links in the National State of the Environment Report link directly to Acrobat files. For these files to open, Acrobat Reader must be installed on your computer. You can set up your browser to open Acrobat files in your browser window. Please refer to the documentation in the Acrobat installation directory to see how this is done. Files on this CD-ROM in Acrobat format include: A State of the Environment Cookbook produced by GRID-Arendal in the cookbook folder. The National Environmental Management Act in the nsoer/resource/nema folder. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARC Explorer 1. Go to the arcexplo folder/directory on the CD-ROM 2. Double click on the Aeclient.exe file and follow the installation instructions. To display some of the maps in the Johannesburg State of the Environment Report, Arc Explorer must be installed on your computer. A few Arc Explorer files are available under the arcshape folder/directory on the CD-ROM. These files are not directly linked to any of the state of the environment reports and are provided as additional information. The coverages (in Geo-format) include: Provincial boundaries. Vegetation map for South Africa Lesotho and Swaziland. South African Ramsar sites.
