Background to CoastCare
The White Paper for Sustainable Coastal Development in South Africa presents a national policy for managing the country's coastal resources. The key messages of the white paper are:
  • Recognising the value of the Coast, estimated to contribute 35% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
  • Facilitating sustainable coastal development (people-centred approach versus resource-centred)
  • Promoting co-ordinated and integrated coastal management
  • Introducing a co-operative style of management
The CoastCare programme consists of projects and products that contribute to the goals and objectives of the coastal policy. Information on CoastCare projects and publications can be found below.
