The Lubombo SDI has, in line with similar programmes in the Southern
African Development Community (SADC), adopted the following priorities.
It aims to:
- Generate economic growth by making maximum use of the inherent
but under-utilised potential of the area.
The key is for governments to maximise private sector involvement
and to create an attractive and stable climate for investors
to operate in.
- Maximise job creation by ensuring that the new industries being
stimulated are competitive and have a long-term future in the
region.
- Broaden ownership patterns in the regional economy.
This involves creating new small businesses and encouraging
outside investors to form joint ventures with local entrepreneurs
and communities.
- Ensure co-operation between all levels of the three governments
whose countries straddle the Lubombo region in order that the
development strategy be implemented with extreme speed and urgency.
The foundation of the SDI is the Lubombo project which was launched
by the governments of Moçambique, South Africa and Swaziland.
This provides for full commitment by all ministries and departments
of the three governments to the development programme.
