Background
Following the release of the first comprehensive national state of the environment report in 1999, the department has initiated several environmental reporting and environmental information initiatives. These include:

• financial and technical support to provinces and local authorities to compile provincial state of the environment reports,
• the development of a guideline document on state of the environment reporting,
• a schools state of the environment initiative,
• the development of a core set of environmental indicators,
• the development of GIS data sets.
• a household environment survey in collaboration with Statistics South Africa.
