Blue Flag beaches

Assessment

Blue flag status indicates that a beach has excellent amenities for public use, has acceptable water quality, safety and security measures, as well as environmental management, education and information programmes. Beaches are subject to a strict monitoring process, and must undergo a pilot phase during which 14 criteria must be achieved. The programme is internationally recognised with 24 countries participating. South Africa has 8 Blue Flag beaches (2003/04) with a further 6 anticipated to join the campaign.

This indicator shows the number of beaches obtaining Blue Flag status per year as a percentage of the number of major beaches in the Eastern Cape. So far, only Humewood Beach in NMMM has received Blue Flag status in the Eastern Cape, although a further three beaches aim to achieve full status in the near future.
