The Keurbooms estuary (34°2' S; 23°23' E) is located in the Western Cape province near the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay. The river is approximately 85 km long with a catchment area of 1 080 sq. km. Agriculture accounted for approximately 15% of the land-cover in the Keurbooms catchment. Very little (less than 1%) of the Keurbooms catchment was degraded and this mainly comprised degraded shrubland. About 85% of the catchment was natural, comprising shrubland, bushland and forest. Very little (less than 1%) of the catchment was developed and this comprised mainly residential development and smallholdings associated with the coastal resort town of Plettenberg Bay.
