The Matigulu/Nyoni estuary
(29°5' S;
31°38' E)
is situated south of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal. This system drains a catchment area of over 900 sq. km. Approximately 60% of the catchment was under agriculture, mainly sugar cane and subsistence farming with some commercial forest. About 6% of the Matigulu/Nyoni catchment comprised degraded bushland. Roughly 33% of the catchment was natural, mostly comprising grassland, bushland and forest. Very little of the catchment was urban (less than 1%) and most of this was residential and commercial and industrial development associated with the inland town of Eshowe.
