Estuaries are an irreplaceable natural resource that must be managed carefully for the mutual benefit of all who enjoy and depend on them.
This site presents a series of maps, showing the nature and extent of land-cover in selected estuarine catchments in South Africa. The maps are based on information collected by the National Land-Cover Database Project (NLC), using data from satellite imagery over the period 1994-1996. A summary report (in PDF format), outlining the approach and results for each catchment, is also available.
This information is valuable for planners and managers involved in estuarine catchment management. It provides a means of rapidly assessing the condition of catchments of rivers that flow into estuaries and further contributes to our understanding of the state of the environment.
Through regular updating, as and when new data becomes available, the system also offers the capability of rapidly and effectively monitor changes in estuarine catchments.
