4 July 2000:
The Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) was adopted at the fourth Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe" in Aarhus, Denmark, on 25 June 1998. Thirty-nine countries and the European Community have since signed it.
The Committee on Environmental Policy’s goal is for the Convention to enter into force by the end of the year 2000. The first meeting of the Signatories to the Convention took place in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, on 19-21 April 1999. At that meeting the Republic of Moldova reported that it had finalized its internal process of ratification, while 22 other countries indicated that they would ratify the Convention by the end of the year 2000.
A second meeting of the Signatories is scheduled for 3-5 July 2000 in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
The Aarhus Implementation Guide is now available at the convention website. See link below.
