Subdirectorate: Biodiversity Management Integration

This subdirectorate also contains the division of Biodiversity Access, Management and Rehabilitation.

Goals:
  • To conserve the diversity of landscapes, ecosystems, habitats, communities, populations, species and genes in South Africa.
  • To ensure that benefits derived from the use and development of South Africa's genetic resources serve national interests.
  • Expand the human capacity to conserve biodiversity, to manage its use and to address factors threatening it.
  • To create conditions and incentives that support the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
  • To promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at international level.
Functions:
  • Regulation and control of access to genetic resources and bioprospecting
  • Management of alien species
  • Biosafety
  • Incentive measures
  • Information management and exchange

Division: Biodiversity Access, Management and Rehabilitation

Functions:

Co-ordinate the regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Review and develop national guidelines and legislative controls for the access to genetic resources. Co-ordinate the regulation and control of alien invasive species. Identify, initiate and co-ordinate relevant research. Develop, promote and facilitate the implementation of conditions and incentive measure programmes to promote cross-sectoral conservation initiatives. Develop, manage and co-ordinate an integrated Clearing House Mechanism in terms of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Undertake and promote the effective implementation and participation in relevant international agreements and develop and co-ordinate the implementation of relevant awareness and education programmes.

Subdirectorate: Biodiversity Untilisation

The subdirectorate also contains the division of Resource Use.

Goals:

Use biological resources sustainably and minimise adverse impacts on biological diversity. Expand the human capacity to conserve biodiversity, to manage its use and to address factors threatening it. Promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at the international level.

Functions:
  • Beneficiation and trade.
  • Biodiversity and tourism.
  • Resource use and exploitation.

Division: Resource Use

Goals:
  • Develop and co-ordinate the implementation of national policies, legislation and implementation strategies for the sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Promote capacity building at all levels of government for the sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Develop, promote, co-ordinate, monitor and review the sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Identify, initiate and co-ordinate relevant research.
  • Develop and co-ordinate the implementation of relevant awareness and education programmes.
  • Undertake and promote the effective implementation of and participation in relevant international agreements such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES).
