Directorate: Coastal Systems
Mission:
Within the framework of the Constitution and national environmental policy, the coastal management office acts as lead agent for coastal management. We realize the people's vision for the coast of South Africa through the formulation and implementation of a national coastal policy.
Goals:
- To formulate a new national policy for coastal management, through an inclusive, participatory process.
- To draft legislation required for effective coastal management.
- To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of management functions undertaken by coastal authorities.
- To develop environmentally based decision-support systems and management guidelines to inform and support coastal decision makers.
- Through its CoastCARE programme, enable effective information exchange throughout the country, to ensure the sustainable use of the coast.
- To maintain its existing advisory and co-ordinating service to decision makers, communities and the broader public, to promote sound coastal management.
- To facilitate joint responsibility between resource users and relevant authorities in the management of coastal resources.
- To fulfill its international obligations and conventions concerning coastal management.

Role:
To facilitate and regulate sustainable and equitable utilisation of offshore resources.
Functions:
- Conduct offshore research in support of resource utilisation.
- Ensure sustainable and equitable offshore resource utilisation.
- Monitor and control offshore resource utilisation.
- Provide a resource assessment and remodelling service.
