Directorate: Innshore Resources Management

Role:

To facilitate and regulate sustainable and equitable development and use of coastal and inshore resources.

Functions:
  • Conduct inshore research in support of resource utilisation.
  • Ensure sustainable and equitable inshore resource utilisation.
  • Monitor and control inshore resource utilisation and report on the state of the coastal environment.
  • Facilitate the establishment of partnerships for coastal and inshore resource management.

Directorate: Antartica and Islands

The Directorate: Antarctica and Islands functions to manage the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) through the provision of operational services, liaison and administration services and provisioning and technical services.

Mission:

The mission of the Directorate: Antarctica and Islands is to ensure that; the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) mission and objectives are achieved in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, through the appropriate Liaison and Administrative Services, Logistic, Operational and Personnel Management.

This is necessary in order to support national sovereignty in the areas concerned and to co-ordinate research activities, optimize and produce credible quality science and technology, nationally and internationally, for the utilization and conservation of natural resources and to foster international relations on logistic, scientific and environmental issues pertaining to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions.

Objectives:

The directorate realizes its objectives through:

  • Liaising with the Department of Foreign Affairs, a number of other state department, Antarctic Treaty countries, other elements of the Antarctic Treaty System, scientific institutions and scientists;
  • Promoting of scientific endeavour, including exchange of information with Antarctic Treaty countries;
  • Ensuring that the provisions of the Management Plan for Prince Edward Islands are adhered to.

Functions:
  • Liaison and administrative services including liaison with other government departments, treaty countries and scientists; exchanging and collating information; formulating manuals and guidelines and ensuring that management plans for the Prince Edward Islands are adhered to.
  • Manning and operational services - manning bases; organising communication; relief voyages and attending to personnel on the bases.
  • Provisioning and technical services - providing and controlling supplies to bases; technical services to vessels; scientific equipment for research on Islands.
