Functions:
  • To develop a national strategy for sustainable development.
  • To monitor progress with the implementation of Agenda 21in all spheres of government through the co-ordination of sustainable development initiatives in close consultation with all major groups.

Subdirectorate: Environmental Education
Functions:
  • Co-ordinating environmental learning in existing curricula and programmes through support for initiatives such as IBEE (Industry and Business Environmental Education forum) and EECI (Environmental Education Curriculum Initiative).
  • Influencing the setting of environmental learning standards and the development of environmental qualifications through SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) and the ESGI (Environmental Standards Generating Initiative).
  • Establishing environmental forums in provinces.
  • Developing relevant resource material and maintaining an efficient information system.
