Outcomes
As a result of South Africa becoming a signatory to the
Montreal Protocol, production and use of Chloro-Fluoro-Carbons and halons (CFCs)in
products has been almost completely eliminated (see Table 1.2).
South Africa is currently under no obligation to reduce its
emissions of greenhouse gases because it is regarded as a developing country. However, it is highly likely
that developing countries will be required to do so, and incentives
may well be provided by the international community in the near
future to encourage developing countries to limit their increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
Nearly 1 million households have been electrified since 1994 as a
result of the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP)
implemented by the new democratically-elected government to provide
for the basic needs of people.(see Social)
