As part of the National State of the Environment 2005 programme, the following products are planned:
The South Africa Environment Outlook (SAEO) 2005
This will be the main product of the programme and will give reliable, accurate and up to date information on the State of the Environment. It will be available as a printed report and also in PDF format. One of the underlying themes of the report will be the sustainable utilization of natural resources for decreasing poverty and enhancing human well-being. Also included in the SAEO will be a section on 'human vulnerability to environmental change', as well as the Outlook itself, which involves a scenario planning exercise to describe possible environmental futures for our country. Options for achieving the best scenario will be outlined and this will guide government in planning for achieving the Millennium Development Goals and addressing the priorities identified in NEPAD's Environmental Action Plan.
An Executive Summary report
This will be a summary of the SAEO, aimed at the general public. It will also be available in printed and PDF formats, and will highlight the major environmental issues faced in South Africa. It will be about 25 pages long.
Issue summaries
Each of five of the most critical issues facing the South African environment will be detailed in short hardcopy summary documents, about 3 pages in length. These will be easy to read and targeted at the general public.
An Internet version of the report
A simple Internet version of the report will be compiled, and will be published on the DEAT web site. Information on this web site will be updated regularly so that South Africans have access to up-to-date environmental information. The Internet system will in the future enable data to be updated prior to the 2010/2011 national SoE Report.
A report for South Africa's Youth
A youth version of the SAEO will be produced.
Impact Assessment
An independent evaluation of the impact and effectiveness of the NSoE 2005 Programme on society is being done. This will provide valuable insight for future SoE reporting. The assessment will have a dual-focus:
- Monitoring the effectiveness of the programme communications strategy during the course of developing the NSoE 2005 products; and
- Assessment of the impact of the NSoE 2005 Programme once the products have been released.
