DEAT held a 1½ day National Planning Workshop (NPW) involving various key stakeholder groups in order to obtain their input into the National SoER programme planning process. The workshop will took place on the 18th and 19th November 2004. This has been planned to co-incide with DEAT's annual SoE seminar, which was held the day before the NPW on the 17th of November 2004.

One of the crucial components of the programme is to ensure that the SoER assesses and reports on themes and issues that are relevant to South Africans. The relevance of the themes and issues that were included in the 1999 SoER requires reassessment, and new issues that may have emerged since then require consideration for inclusion in the update.

The objectives of the NPW were to:
  • Share information regarding the NSoER programme and process with the key stakeholders;
  • Assess the current relevance of themes and issues reported on in the 1999 SoER, and identify new themes and issues as appropriate; and
  • Obtain comment on the products of the NSoER programme.
