Everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their
health or well-being and the right to have the environment protected
for the benefit of present and future generations. Furthermore, everyone
has the right to have access to information on the state of the environment,
as well as actual and future threats to the environment.
Realizing that information on the state of the environment is not readily accessible,
the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism started a state of the environment
reporting initiative in the late 1990s. Some of the first state of the environment
reports to be published was the 1999 National State of the Environment Report
followed soon afterwards by the publication of reports for Cape Town, Durban,
Johannesburg and Pretoria. Since 1999, several provincial and municipal state
of the environment reports have been completed.Support is also given to the state
of rivers initiative run by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
During 2004, the department decided to commission a comprehensive assessment
of, and report on the state of the environment in South Africa. This will be
the first comprehensive report since 1999. The project will commence towards
the end of September 2004. It is anticipated that the 2005 state of the environment
report will be available during the second half of 2005.
