Schools initiative

The State of Environment Reports of the South African Cities of Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria were launched by the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism on 26 October 1999. The city state of the environment initiative formed part of the CEROI programme.

City reports are based on a template facilitated by custom-made software called Publikit, developed by GRID-Arendal in Norway and Ugland Publikit in Norway. The template provides the structure, graphical layout and framework on which to build the content of the SoE report. The Publikit software is customised for the CEROI programme and enables cities to create, maintain and publish their SoE reports on the Internet.

The DPSIR framework assists the learner to identify human activities that are putting pressure on the state of the environment and that impact on the quality of our environment and therefore need our response.

The booklet can be used to:

  • Identify environmental priorities in South Africa
  • Make learning relevant by identifying priorities in your own school
  • Make plans, take action and contribute to better state of environment in South Africa.
