Area Profile

The informal settlements in the area are Marios, Popo Molefe, 10 rooms, Refentse, khulumane book, Bonanza and Melodi. The combined population is 6 TO 7000 Residents of which 70% are unemployed. 65% of the population are males. There are 7 boreholes and none of them is functional for more than 10 years. No electricity in the houses. Average income of those employed earns less than 2000 per month. Those that are unemployed rely on social grants. There is 1 Primary School for the community and no High School nearby. Madibeng are sending water tanks which the community say are unreliable as they sometimes go for over a week without receiving any service.

Project Background

Minister BEE Molewa has committed to undertaking various community projects which will serve as Ministerial Community Service Programs or Outreach. In the next three months the Minister is targeting the North West Province and Kwazulu Natal.

Haartebeespoort rural communities have been identified as a test project before rolling it out to other areas in the Province. The Haartebeespoort event is scheduled for Saturday the 02 March 2013 and will entail fixing and resuscitation of the existing non functioning boreholes. The DWA office in Haartebeespoortdam has committed to fixing all seven boreholes in the area by Friday 01st March 2013 for Minister to hand over to community the next day.

Minister will also kick - start a cleaning campaign in the area and engage the community in a PPP. Phase two of the project will follow after June this year and will focus on creating activities that the community can benefit from and those include launching the food gardening program.

  2. 09:20 - 10:30 - Minister launches the cleaning up campaign and opens the 1st revamped tap supplied from the newly installed tanks.

Part 2

  1. 11:00 - Clean up teams begin work
  2. 12:30 - Clean up teams break for light lunch
  3. 13:30 - Clean up teams restart cleaning
