Background 
 

His Worship, the Mayor of the Greater Kokstad Municipality, Councillor BM Mtolo has written to the Honourable Minister, BEE Molewa of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) requesting the department to conduct an Environmental Career Expo targeting approximately 2000 grade 12 learners and unemployed youth with matric in Kokstad. The request also proposed for the environmental career expo to become an annual event.

In response to the request, DEA has held a first plenary in Kokstad hosted by the Mayor and consisted of the Speaker, Councilors from around Kokstad, school principals, Youth Development Officer, KwaZulu-Natal ​Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (KZN DEDTEA) officials and DEA officials.

 

Purpose and objectives
 

The objective of the Career Expo is to empower grade 12 learners with information that will stimulate the development of an appetite to pursue a career in the environment sector and provide the unemployed youth with information that will expose them to the various programmes and opportunities as will be exhibited by various Expo exhibitors. The combined target of grade 12 learners and unemployed youth with matric is approximately 4000. Through engagement with the municipality, the proposed date of the Expo will be 31st August 2018.The Expo is intended to create an awareness about environmental career opportunities, educate the learners and unemployed youth about conserving the environment and pursue a career in the environment sector. The spinoff thereof, will make those that are interested in environmental careers to further their studies in institutions of higher learning and upon completion plough their trade in Kokstad municipality by providing environmental conservation, management, economic contribution through sustainable use of natural resources.

Communications ojectives

  • To provide career guidance on environmental careers to Grade 9 – 10 learners
  • To expose the unemployed youth with matric to opportunities on training programmes, enterprise development opportunities
  • To educate the public about their role in the protection of the environment
  • To promote the conservation and sustainable use of South Africa’s natural resources
  • To urge South Africans to report environmental crimes to the authority

Event schedule / format
 

The Expo will be conducted in the Kokstad Youth Centre that will be utilised for presentations to learners and unemployed youth on various environment careers which will show case practical work done by experts in the field through pictures and videos. This will allow for attendees to interact with the presenter in order to provide clarity and make it easier for them to select their preferred choice of environmental career. The grade 12 learners will be provided an opportunity to ask the expert questions about the work that they do in their field of work in order to allow them to have variety of choices in the environment space and their selection will be based on their interest and willingness to pursue the course.

The second aspects of the Expo will be show casing of career opportunities to learners by assisting them with registration and course selection at Universities and FET colleges based on their preference. e.g. Durban University of Technology to provide one-on-one provision of information about course requirements and this will allow learners to make an informed decision as advised and guided by institutions of higher learning. The institutions of higher will exhibit their career opportunities to learners and unemployed youth with matric inside the hall on the sides.

The third layer of the Expo will provide exhibitors an opportunity to advertise their work opportunities on various fields of work, bursaries, internship programs, learnership programs which graduate programs. The Department of Environmental Affairs will also exhibit about  internship programme and programmes that can provide  unemployed youth with training and work opportunities through e.g. YES Programme, MASS Programme, NYDA (to assist unemployed youth looking for jobs through their youth volunteering programme, co-operative support, registration into job database). 3.1 Career Guidance to the Grade 9, 10 & 11 Learners from 28 - 30 August 2018

Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA ) in collaboration with the Greater Kokstad Municipality  will be conducting Career talks and subjects choice for Senior Phase and FET phase with learners from Kokstad local municipality in August from 28- 30 August 2018.

Purpose of these sessions is to:

  • To provide career guidance on environmental careers to the learners
  • Expose learners to different Subjects in Grades 9, 10 & 11 that are related to the careers in the Environment Sector.
  • Inform learners about qualifications relating to different careers and subjects, strengths and weakness, interest and abilities.

Learners will have the opportunity to interact with officials from DEA on a familiar setting where they will be free to further enquire about other aspects concerning careers. Schools are kindly requested to arrange a venue that can accommodate all grades.

3.2 Community Outreach from 29 – 30 August 2018

DEA will conduct community outreach in malls in the Kokstad area and the intentions of the community outreach are information sharing and creating awareness about DEA programmes. The outreach will raise awareness about climate change, anti-rhino poaching, recycling, environmental crimes reporting, departmental bursaries,   internship programme, air quality and other topics covered by the department.

In collaboration with KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, trees will be planted in schools as a symbol of marking the environmental career expo as one of the milestones that seeks to educate learners and unemployed youth with matric to pursue careers in environment. The other significance in tree planting is improve air quality, provide oxygen, carbon capture and habit for birds.
