South Africa’s celebration of World Wildlife Day

Background

 

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3 March, the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora. The theme for World Wildlife Day 2015 is Wildlife Crime is serious: let’s get serious about wildlife crime” to highlight the positive role that local communities can play in helping to curb illegal wildlife trade.  The theme is complemented by the sub themes: “Wildlife and sustainable tourism” and “The role of local communities in conservation”.

The theme for this year’s World Wildlife Day is “Wildlife Crime is serious: let’s get serious about wildlife crime”. The aim is to highlight the positive role that local communities can play in helping to curb illegal wildlife trade.   This theme is complemented by two sub-themes “Wildlife and sustainable tourism” and “The role of local communities in conservation” as innovative solutions to the challenges posed by wildlife crime in certain regions around the world.
