17 October 2016

The Department of Environmental Affairs invites media to join the briefing following the BASIC Ministerial Coordination Meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The briefing will be streamed via Periscope on the Department’s handle - @environmentZA

The BASIC group of countries – Brazil, India, China and South Africa – meet regularly on the margins of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) sessions - with the aim of sharing and discussing positions around the international climate change negotiations.

The Ministers of Environment of the BASIC countries have been meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco from the 16 and 17 October 2016 to discuss inter alia the early entry into force of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change, as well as their priorities for the upcoming COP22 in Morocco.

The BASIC meetings have become an important forum for the group to coordinate positions and broadly support the G77 plus China group.

This is the second meeting of BASIC Ministers since the adoption of the Paris Agreement at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in December 2015, and the 23rd session of BASIC Ministerial meetings overall.
