Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries to host a stakeholder engagement session with waste sector

01 March 2020

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Barbara Creecy will host a stakeholder engagement session with the waste sector on the National Waste Management Strategy tomorrow, Monday 02 March 2020.

In an effort to fast track effective implementation of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries has developed the National Waste Management Strategy, which promotes waste minimisation, re-use, recycling and recovery of waste. This initiative will contribute significantly towards diverting recyclable waste from landfill sites.

It is in pursuit of this objective that Minister Creecy will be consulting the waste sector, taking into consideration the significant potential of the waste management industry in growing the country’s economy and create much needed jobs for the people of South Africa, while contributing towards an environment that is not harmful to the health and wellbeing of the citizens. The success of the strategy depends on the extent to which it finds commitment and support in local and provincial governments and the private sector.
