Postponed: The Department of Environmental Affairs, SANParks and Coal of Africa to sign Biodiversity Offset Agreement for Vele Colliery
17 March 2014
The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), South African National Parks (SANParks), and CoAL of Africa Limited (CoAL) will, on 20 March 2014, sign a historic biodiversity offset agreement (BOA) for the Vele Colliery. The signing will form part of a media briefing on the issue and will take place at Cricklewood Manor, Pretoria.
The biodiversity offset agreement for Vele Colliery is aimed at strengthening co-operation between the three parties towards the conservation and sustainable development of the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape (MCL) World Heritage Site. It is also aimed at maintaining the integrity of the site, and ensuring that the negative impacts of development are avoided, minimised or remedied in the pursuit of sustainable development. The Agreement is also aimed at promoting the development of Mapungubwe so that it benefits the receiving environment, the local economy and resident communities.
During the briefing session, addresses will be delivered by the DEA Deputy Director-General for Biodiversity and Conservation, Mr Fundisile Mketeni; SANParks CEO, Dr David Mabunda; and Coal of Africa Limited CEO, David Brown. These will articulate the importance of the agreement for each of the organisations represented, and for the South African mining and environmental sectors as a whole. The addresses will be followed by the signing of the agreement, after which the session will be open for questions and engagement with the media.
