Minister Molewa to visit Eco-Furniture Factory in Ga-Rankuwa

24 June 2015

Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa will on Friday, 26 June 2015 visit an Eco-Furniture Factory at Ga-Rankuwa Industrial Park, Pretoria. The factory marks its first year after being officially launched by City of Tswane Executive Mayor Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa and former Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms. Rejoice Mabudafhasi.

Delivering on its mandate, the Department of Environmental Affairs through the Working for Water (WfW) programme, and funding from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), initiated a project that uses invasive alien plants to make school desks for poor schools in the country.

The Eco-Furniture Programme (EFP) is currently implemented through the South African National Parks. The programme aims to capitalize on the underlying value of the alien invasive plants by manufacturing products in line with maximizing job creation and skills-transfer opportunities.

Furthermore, the programme aims to put over 500, 000 Learners behind a quality school desk and create 900 EPWP job opportunities once the project is fully operational for the Ga-Rankuwa community. The City of Tshwane’s overall objective is to contribute to government’s New Growth Path and the job creation agenda. The factory has assisted the City’s efforts to fight poverty by creating sustainable job opportunities and develop skills among the poor.
