Minister Edna Molewa to lead the National Waste Management Summit

03 March 2015

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa invites stakeholders and members of the media to the National Waste Management Summit taking place from 09 – 11 March 2015 at White River, Mpumalanga.

The National Waste Management Summit will be convened under the theme: War on Waste, Driving the recycling economy in South Africa, which emphasises the creation of an enabling environment for economic growth, particularly within the waste management sector. The Summit will provide a platform for robust and constructive high level and technical engagements on waste management priorities for the country. It will also deliberate on co-regulatory approaches for effective waste management in accordance to the requirements of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008).

Whist it’s acknowledged that recycling of waste is continuously taking place in South Africa, it is also noted that its full potential to contribute to the country’s economic growth has not been fully explored. Effective exploration of what is referred to as recycling economy requires effective coordination and full cooperation of the stakeholders and role players in the waste management industry. In this regard, the industry will be able to upsurge creation of much needed jobs for the people whilst also providing environmental health benefits for communities, thereby responding to the aspirations of the National Development Plan.

Minister Molewa will address the Summit on Tuesday 10 March 2015, and will also brief the media on the waste management issues in South Africa.
