Minister Molewa to lead National Marine Week celebration

02 October 2013

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa, will lead the opening function of the 2013 National Marine Week, in Port Elizabeth, on Monday, 7 October 2013. This year’s celebration will be under theme: “Better Understanding of Your Oceans”.

National Marine Week is an initiative of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) celebrated annually to raise awareness about the marine environment and inter-connectivity of oceans with the rest of inland South Africa. The campaign also aims to promote sustainable use and conservation for the benefit of present and future generations.

The observation of National Marine Week recognises the important role that oceans surrounding South Africa play in giving life to the country. The campaign therefore seeks to foster a sense of pride in each South African for the beautiful oceans and coasts, celebrating our unique environment and the one-of-a-kind events that occur off our coasts. All South Africans (coastal and inland) are responsible for the well-being of the ocean and coastal environment and this campaign is therefore intended for all South Africans.

There will be opportunity to take photographs and opportunity for media interviews with Departmental senior managers.
