Minister Edna Molewa to deliver climate change lecture at Tsinghua University, Beijing

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr. Edna Molewa will on Friday 7th of September 2018 deliver a lecture at the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ICCSD) at Tsinghua University in the Chinese capital, Beijing.
Dr. Molewa’s invitation to deliver this prestigious lecture comes two months since she was made an Officier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur by the government of France - in recognition of her role in the negotiations that led to the signing of the historic Paris Agreement in 2015. This is the highest French national order and was established by Napoleon Bonaparte.
Tsinghua University is one of the world’s foremost institutions of higher learning and was ranked 30th in the 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 14th in the World Reputation Rankings.
The ICCSD was founded in 2017 and its mission is to provide Chinese solutions to global climate change and sustainability issues; and ‘integrates domestic and overseas resources to facilitate the implementation of the Paris Agreement to Combat Climate Change.
Minister Molewa’s lecture, titled “The road to 2020: Sustainable Development, International Cooperation and the Primacy of Multilateralism in the fight against Climate Change” will highlight South Africa’s efforts at both a domestic and international level to transition the country to a low-carbon, inclusive, climate change resilient future.
The Minister will also highlight the importance of international cooperation and dialogue in ensuring that the countries of the world meet their obligations in terms of the Paris Agreement.
The Lecture has previously been delivered by Mr. Xie Zhenhua, China’s Special Representative for Climate Change Affairs and former Vice-Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission; as well as by the former US Special Envoy for Climate Change Mr. Todd Stern.
The lecture and dialogue will be attended by approximately 300 university faculty and students as well as policymakers and will be carried live via the ICCSD website
