The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa will on Friday 10 April 2015 unveil an augmented landfill site worth R12 million Naledi Local Municipality, North West Province. The launch forms part of the Government’s National Imbizo Focus Week, which enables Government leaders to closely interact with communities in different parts of the country.
The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has funded construction of a landfill site and the associated infrastructure in Huhudi Village, Vryburg. The funding of this project was channelled through the Department’s Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme (EPIP).
The project, executed using labour intensive methods as per the requirements of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), has thus far created work opportunities for at least 182 local people. Amongst the employed are 120 women, 145 youth and 2 persons living with disability. Furthermore, the DEA will provide beneficiaries with accredited training which will equip them with necessary skills to acquire better job opportunities on exit from the projects.
The DEA is also providing support to the creation of waste management infrastructure such as a new cell, paving of the landfill site, provision of a weighbridge and waste sorting area were separation of recyclable material will be sorted. These initiatives will not only address the challenge of poor waste management, but also maximise socio-economic benefits through job creation, awareness and education through skills development.
