02 November 2018

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), will host the National Ocean and Coastal Information Management System (OCIMS) stakeholder workshop, from 6 -8 November 2018, at the President Hotel, Bantry Bay, Cape Town.

The workshop brings together ocean and coastal stakeholders and experts to provide feedback on the progress made with the development of the OCIMS and related Decision Support Tools that use satellite information collected by a number of government departments and entities. Some of these tools are used in monitoring the harmful algal blooms, tracking vessel in the South Africa Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and operations at sea and rescue. Delegates will be exposed to live demonstrations of these innovative tools that cover a range of areas and sectors in the marine environment.

This innovative technology is crucial to government’s compliance and enforcement and to various South African industries, such as, wild fisheries and aquaculture.
