Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson to host International Day for Biodiversity

20 May 2015

On Friday, 22 May 2015, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson, will celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity in the Msunduzi Local Municipality, located in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. The United Nations proclaimed May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Several biodiversity initiatives aimed at solving water security challenges and promoting sustainable development in the catchment areas of the Municipality are currently underway.  These initiatives include “Save the Midmar Dam” Project and the WESSA “Working with Traditional Leaders in the uMgeni Catchment Programme”. This area has also attracted various international projects focussed on biodiversity and climate change adaptation, some of which will be marked on Friday, 22 May 2015.

Deputy Minister Thomson will also highlight an international programme by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), known as “Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Land Use Regulation and Management at Municipal Scale”.
