18 July 2018
The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson, together with the Mayor of Dannhauser Municipality Cllr JP Phakathi, handed-over five houses to indigent families as part of Nelson Mandela International Day in Dannhauser, Kwa-Zulu Natal, today, 18 July 2018.
This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day marks 100 years since Nelson Mandela’s birth and the Nelson Mandela Foundation continues to encourage the nation to emulate the servant-leader by becoming change makers under the theme: “Take Action and Inspire Change. Make Every Day a Mandela Day.
The theme links to the quote by Nelson Mandela: “We need to restore and reaffirm the dignity of the people of Africa and the developing world. We need to place the eradication of poverty at the top of world priorities. We need to know with a fresh conviction that we all share a common humanity and that our diversity in the world is the strength for our future together.”
Deputy Minister Thomson and Mayor Phakathi honoured this year’s slogan, #ACTIONAGAINSTPOVERTY by handing over homes to five indigent families in the community of KwaMdakane. The families also received groceries, toiletries, heaters, fridges and other appliances.
In heeding the call to make a difference, both the Deputy Minister and the Mayor, joined by government officials and the community of Dannhauser participated in a clean-up campaign around town to promote good green deeds that seeks to eradicate littering and illegal dumping.
Deputy Minister placed an emphasis on people acquiring the necessary skills needed in order to eradicate poverty in disadvantaged communities and also highlighted the importance of education in the fight against poverty.
“Working to overcome the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment – conservation should also play an important role. Our environment is our most valuable natural resource,” said Deputy Minister.
The day’s activities ended with the handover of gardening tools and opening of a pre-school by the Deputy Minister and the Mayor.
