Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson opens Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg

Deputy Minister Barbara officially opens the upgraded AlexandraPark in uMsunduzi Municipality.

Department of Environmental Affairs in partnership with the Umsunduzi Local Municipalitytoday, 24 February 2017 handed over Alexandra Park to the people of Pietermaritzburg. The ceremony was led by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms Barbara Thomson and Mayor of Umsunduzi local Municipality Cllr Themba Njilo.

The Alexandra Park revitalization project was funded and implemented by the Department through its Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme (EPIP). The project falls within the Greening and Open Space Management Focus Area. This focus area focuses on establishment of community parks and rehabilitation of open spaces.

An amount of R12 million was injected into the project, which has created a number of opportunities for local residents. A total number of 115 work opportunities were created, of the 115 work opportunities 57 are women, 74 youth and 2 people with disability.

About 1000 community members were excited to celebrate the opening of this magnificent park, which is now invigorated into a safe popular recreational and play centre for the people of Pietermaritzburg. Alexandra Park possesses sections such as children’s play area, Percy Taylor Rockery, people’s park and ablution facility, fencing, pedestrian walkways, pergolas, paving, chess amphitheatre and general landscaping.

Speaking at the opening of park Deputy Minister Thomson highlighted the importance of the recreational facilities and the opportunities this project generated for the residents.

"Non accredited training opportunities have been done for the local people equipping them with the necessary skills that will enable them to find employment in other employment opportunities on exit from the projects. Moreover the project has contributed to the development of local small business enterprises. Such small businesses have been used in providing services in provision of protective clothing, provision of training, construction. To date 9 Local small business enterprises have been used,” said Deputy Minister Thomson.
