Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson to officiate the Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa Schools Recycling Awards Ceremony

05 December 2018

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thomson will officiate the Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) Schools Recycling Awards ceremony tomorrow, Thursday 06 December 2018 in Pretoria.

Over 860 schools and 700 000 learners and teachers participated in the Schools Recycling Programme this year – showing excellent growth from just 40 schools in 2011. The programme, over the past six years, has created 78 jobs for young people as Recycling Representatives, with 24 of the young people finding permanent employment and 36 collectors trained and supported.

The Schools Recycling Programme is part of CCBSA’s commitment to creating a waste-free South Africa and in line with Coca-Cola’s global commitment of a World Without Waste (WWW) by 2030. This year, the programme recovered 2 324 tonnes of recyclable material, which is almost double the amount of 1 168 tonnes collected last year and 76% above the target set for 2018.

Participating schools earn money from the waste collected and stand a chance to win funds which they use to improve their facilities. The programme also creates young ambassadors for environmental stewardship at home and within their direct circle of influence, driving responsible behaviour in their families and communities.

The intention of giving the awards, is to create a generation of South Africans committed to ensuring that discarded waste does not end up as litter or on a landfill site. Schools are the perfect partners in our quest to create a waste-free South Africa.
