Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs to open Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms Barbara Thomson, together with the Mayor of Umsunduzi Local Municipality Cllr Themba Njilo, will hand over the Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg on Friday 24 February 2017.

The initiative to upgrade Alexandra Park was taken in order to make it a safe, popular recreational and play centre for the people in Pietermaritzburg. The park possesses sections such as children’s play area, Percy Taylor Rockery, people’s park and ablution facility, fencing, pedestrian walkways, pergolas, paving, chess amphitheatre and general landscaping.

The project was funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs through its Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme (EPIP). The project was implemented using labour intensive methods as per the requirements of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), in the process; jobs small business development and skills development opportunities were created.
