Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Barbara Thomson to address graduation ceremony for Youth Environmental Services (YES) programme

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will address a graduation ceremony for young South Africans who participated in the Youth Environmental Services (YES) programme on Monday, 5 November 2018, at the University Of South Africa (UNISA), in Pretoria.
The Youth Environmental Services (YES) programme is one of the Department of Environmental Affairs’ initiatives that use labour intensive methods in line with the requirements of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to ensure job creation, as well as small business and skills development.
The YES programme has recruited 134 young people, mostly women and people living with disabilities. They have been exposed to personal development, accredited training and exit opportunities, while delivering environmental services that benefited communities.
A total of twenty-eight (28) participants who were in the first group of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 financial years will be awarded a full qualification on National Diploma in Environmental Education, Training and Development Practice from ETDP SETA in partnership with the department, Delta Environment Center, and University of South Africa (UNISA). Whereas, 120 participants will be graduating in skills programme with 147 credits and will each be awarded with certificate of attendance.
As part of the training programme, participants were involved in various community services, such as environmental surveys, sorting waste at the source, door to door educational campaigns, tree planting, school cleaning, environmental education in schools, painting community murals and the celebration of key environment related days.
