Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to lead World Wetlands Day commemoration

The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson lead a public awareness drive to commemorate the World Wetlands Day (WWD) under the theme: “Wetlands for disaster risk reduction” in Tembisa, Gauteng Province on Friday, 17 February 2017.

The WWD is an annual commemoration of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) signed on 02 February 1971 in the Iranian City of Ramsar, with South Africa formally becoming a member in 1975.

The annual celebration of the WWD is aimed at raising public awareness on direct and indirect benefits of wetlands in particular the role that they play in disaster risk reduction, their benefits to humanity, and also encouraging the participation of local communities in promoting the wise use of wetlands for their long term sustainability.

The Department will commemorate the WWD jointly with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (DAFF), Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM).
