23 July 2015 - The Department of Environmental Affairs’ (DEA) SA Agulhas II has embarked on a winter research expedition yesterday evening, 22 July 2015. DEA collaborated with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the National Research Foundation (NRF) and Council for Scientific Industrial and Research (CSIR) to embark on the research voyage

11 June 2015 - The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) will host the annual SA Agulhas II Open Day this Saturday, 13 June 2015, in Cape Town. The open day will highlight the Department’s work in the ocean and coastal environment, and will also provide a guided tour of the vessel from its state of the art laboratories to the lounge area dedicated to Miriam Makeba..

DEA's research vessels returns from Marion Island 

15 May 2015 - The Department of Environmental Affairs welcomed its research vessel the SA Agulhas II from her 3rd Marion Island relief Voyage early this morning, 15 May 2015, at the East Pier Quay in Cape Town. Some of the activities that the M71 team members who participated in the voyage did  included, collecting diet and blood samples from mammals and birds as well as soil and plant samples through the different seasons in the year.

09 April 2015 - The Department of Environmental Affairs’ SA Agulhas II will today, Thursday 09 April 2015, embark on her third logistical and scientific voyage to Marion Island. Aboard the ship is a host of researchers and participants from Department of Environmental Affairs, Department of Public Works, the South African Weather Service and various tertiary institutions. The Marion 72 expedition team will be the fourth of its kind to inhabit the new base since its commission in March 2011 and will occupy it for a period of 14 months.

16 Feb 2015 - The Department of Environmental Affairs will once again welcome back the SA Agulhas II as she returns from her almost 3 months annual voyage from Antarctica on Tuesday, 17 February 2015 at the East Pier Shed, Cape Town. Aboard the vessel will be the Sanae 53 expedition team, DEA’s supporting team, members from the National Department of Public Works, Starlite Aviation, and the Scientists who left for Antarctica last year on 28 November 2013 and have spent 14 months at the base conducting critical research.

26 November 2013 - The Department of Environmental Affairs’ SA Agulhas II will be embarking on her second relief voyage to Antarctica (the “White Continent”) on Thursday 28 November 2013. The voyage will be under the watch of the first black Master of the SA Agulhas II, Knowledge Bengu, whose main responsibility will include pollution control and ensuring safety of the ship and the people on board.

21 October 2013 - The Department Environmental Affair will be hosting a high level Belgian economic mission presided over by HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium on board the SA Agulhas II in Cape Town on Friday 25 October 2013. South Africa hosts Ice-Breaking Workshop

21 October 2013 - The Department of Environmental Affairs will host representatives of 13 countries for an ice-breaking workshop which starts today, Monday 21 October in Cape Town. The workshop is facilitated by the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) and will take place on board the SA Agulhas II until Wednesday 22 October 2013.

SA Agulhas II docks in Cape Town after a successful voyage to Gough Island 

09 October 2013 - The SA Agulhas II returned to Cape Town today, Wednesday 09 October, after a successful relief voyage to Gough Island. The Gough 58 team, comprising 13 members and the first expedition team to have sailed with the new vessel after arriving in May 2012, spent 13 months on Gough Island.

16 September 2013 - The Director-General of Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Ms Nosipho Ngcaba and the British Consul General, Mr Christopher Trott, will on Tuesday 17 September 2013, sign a new lease agreement for South Africa’s use of a weather observation station based on the UK’s Gough Island.

Gough Island is a volcanic island rising from the South Atlantic Ocean to heights of over 900 metres above sea level with an area of 91 km².
